DuranDuranMusic recently posted a video shot in March, in which Katy has a chat with John about making the upcoming album and a bit about John’s involvement in the New Roads School project. There’s a lot of background noise, most notably Simon performing his vocal warm-up. Also, the video inexplicably ends in mid-conversation. Distractions aside, I found several points to be very interesting:

    • John speaks favorably about Mark Ronson, describing him as a “sweet guy” and a “musicians producer” saying that Mark takes more care to get the instruments sounding right, compared to the production of Red Carpet Massacre.
    • It was May 2009 when John, Nick, and Roger recorded their part of the new tracks. John says that he does not listen to the unfinished music over and over, rather waiting for Simon to go through his “process” in order to preserve the power of the music that he will have to remain excited about for the next two years.
    • John describes the last couple of albums made since they got back together as just “ok… so this one really needs to be a cracker.”
    • Speaking about the time it’s taking to put this album together, John says, “It’s the real world. We’re not a young band. It’s not the Rio era when all we did was play with each other, so you can’t expect that kind of schedule.”

In part two of the video, JT talks a bit about Danimals and also says he is not interested in continuing his acting career.

  • Here’s my speculations on John’s update:

As for John’s apparent 180 regarding RCM, I speculate the passing of time, John’s mercurial way of thinking, and working with someone such as Mark Ronson, a producer who has/is so personally affected by their music, informs his opinion of that album at this point.

I’m in agreement about not rushing the album. I seem to differ from a lot of fans in my patience for its release. “Durantime” is just a giggle to me. :] Now, if we’reat year 4 and nothing’s out I may feel differently. ;)

When they were recording Rio, to use his example, they were around 22, no families of their own, lived in the same country, and all that.

From what I’ve read on the New Roads site, it had me wishing there were more schools like this. I highly dig John supporting them.

Lastly, I too wish the video updates were released closer to when they were actually recorded, and not cut off mid-conversation point. :)

Whew! Thank you for *y’all’s* patience. :D

  • Kitty thanks for deciphering what they heck he was saying..geesh! I am going deaf as it is, and background noise is really distracting. (yes even SLB warming up). That being said, I am happy that they are working with Mark it seems that they have a good relationship with him and they are excited about this new album. It does remind me of the Rio days, and that they are they are keeping up informed so we are along with them for the ride.
Yes we have been waiting a long time for this new album, but I said it before I’d rather wait for perfection then rush it and be disapointed.

  • I sure agree with John. Based on these sound bytes, he sure seems to be honest and humble about the unfolding process of the new album. Sure, I(we) have 12 albums to keep us listening ’til we get the new one, but I really hope the new album surprises everyone- in the best possible way! So yes John, please don’t rush! …and please don’t over hype the new album or make associations to past hits! If the music is good, people will flock to buy the album! I’ll stay tuned and wish you guys luck!

    Kisses and Hugs!!!

    Denisse!!!

  • Thankyou so much for posting this!! He’s lovely and I’m glad that he can be so honest about their recording process and everything. Love him!!

  • Thank you very much for the resume. It’s hard to understand what they are saying with all that noise for a foreign person. JT’s reply about his acting career didn’t surprise me at all. His last job as an actor (Samantha Who?) was more a cameo. I wouldn’t consider it an acting performance. I wanted to know more about the New Roads School Project: it seems to me he’s happy to be part of and I think it was a new and a fresh air to his musical spirit

One question. What does it mean?
“ok… so this one really needs to be a cracker.”

  • By saying this one really needs to be a “cracker” he means it needs to be really, really good ;)
